High Winds Rip Through Woodbridge Area

The Potomac Mills sign.

Friday, Feb. 25 — High winds in our area have decimated one of the local landmarks here in Woodbridge — the Potomac Mills sign.

This enormous sign loomed over I-95 like a rising moon, big and bright and seen easily every night from either direction. It’s been shredded by winds that have gusted up to 60mph according to the National Weather Service. It was only last week that one half of the sign was ripped away due to high winds. Now it’s been finished off — the other half of the sign is gone, leaving a blank, round iron structure with pieces of canvas flapping in the wind.

Some 2,000 customers of Dominion Virginia Power were without power this afternoon as the winds swept into the area. The power company is asking for outages to be reported at 866-366-4357.
