Memorial Day Weekend Best Bets

Friday, May 28 — With the unofficial start to summer hitting this weekend and pools opening across the area, we look at a handful of ways to spend time over the three-day weekend if you haven’t made other plans, like hitting the beach. While nothing beats a quick trip to a local ice cream shop for an enjoyable break, or getting into an air-conditioned theater to watch a new movie, there’s plenty to do in the great outdoors this weekend as well. Check out some of these local events:

  • Potomac Nationals: Home games each night this weekend, including tonight at 7:05, Saturday at 6:35, and Sunday and Monday at 1:05. The Nationals also are trying something new on Fridays by showing a movie on the new video board following each Friday home game at Pfitzner Stadium for the remainder of the 2010 season.
  • Swimming: In addition to neighborhood community pools, the Prince William County Park Authority waterparks are open as well. SplashDown Waterpark and WaterWorks Waterparks are open. And check out this listing of PWC public pools.
  • Farmers Markets: Great places to get local produce and goods not only this weekend, but every weekend through the summer and much of the fall — Thursdays and Saturdays in Manassas, Saturdays in Occoquan, and Sunday in Dale City.
  • Virginia State Parks: There are a host of events at most of Virginia’s state parks. We’ve compiled this list of events for Memorial Day weekend. Closest parks to the Woodbridge area are Leesylvania and Mason Neck. For a little longer drive, you can also hit Caledon, Westmoreland and Lake Anna to the south, and Sky Meadows and Shenandoah River to the west.
