Cool Places for Kids Birthday Parties

We have three young boys, and we have tried several places in the area to celebrate their birthdays as well as the birthdays of their friends. Check out the list below for brief descriptions of our experiences. We encourage any testimonials from you about your favorite places to take your kids for their birthdays. Just send us an email, and we will add in your suggestions here.

U.S. Tae Kwon Do

U.S. Tae Kwon Do in Dillingham Square: This is one of our favorites. We have all boys, but it’s a great place for both boys and girls. The birthday party package includes an hour of exercise, an obstacle course and a Tae Kwon Do lesson as well as a cake and juice. It really lets them get all of their energy out while having lots of fun. The staff is fantastic too. Good for ages 3-14.

Michaels Arts and Crafts: They have wonderful craft making parties, and a new store has opened on PW Parkway at I-95 across the street from Target.

Chinn Aquatics Center: For those who love to splash around in the water year-round, this is a nice place for a swim party, especially for a winter birthday.

Cartoon Cuts: This is a cute idea for girls. They do a glamor party where they get their hair and nails done. (703) 670-3400. They are near Chuck E. Cheese and Shoppers Foods.

Burke Lake Park: This park, which is north of the Occoquan River on Rt. 123 in Fairfax County is fun for both girls and boys. In the summer they have a minature train they can ride that goes through the park and they have a nice playground and picnic area.

Lake Ridge Nursery "Pumpkin Patch"

Lake Ridge Nursery (during the month of October): More people were born in October than any other month. The Lake Ridge Nursery on Old Bridge Road across from Springwoods Rd., turns into a children’s wonderland in the weeks preceeding Halloween. They set up hay mounds, gunny sack slides, rope swings, moon bounces and a HUGE Batman slide. You bring your own cake and other necessities but you have an enclosed playland that everyone can enjoy. You can also bring your own food or purchase hot dogs and drinks on site. It’s great for toddlers up to about age 10. The nursery also has a year-round selection of beautiful plants, trees and gifts. Call them at 703-590-0178.

Reptiles Alive! This is a fun idea, especially for boys between ages 7 and 12. Reptiles Alive will come to your house with a bunch of real reptiles and turtles and other creepy crawly things to let the kids see them first-hand and learn more about them and their habitats. It’s both fun and educational.

Laser Quest, Potomac Mills: What kid doesn’t like to play laser tag? This is a really fun birthday idea for an active afternoon for ages 6 to 60. They don’t post their phone number on their birthday information page on the Web, but you can reach them at 703-490-4180.

Youth Sports (works great for ages 3+ …as long as the child will separate they can customize party activities that are age appropriate!)

Moon Bounces for rent: Moon bounces and puppet shows that come to your home or daycare.

Julia Taseva’s Puppet Shows and Workshops (ages 3-12)

Great Kids Village (formerly Andy’s Parties) – 540-604-1802
They run full-service, themed children’s parties and classes and recently opened a franchise that serves the Woodbridge area out of Stafford. they serve kids of all ages and go to clients’ homes, community centers and other venues for parties.

Dale City WaterWorks: They do it all for you at a base rate of $25 per child, which includes all-day access to the waterpark, two-hour use of pavilion decorated with balloons, a meal for each child, four free adult admissions and free birthday child admission. Note: they do not allow outside food or drink into the park.

WL reader Terri Bolster wrote to us for her party recommendation:
I wanted to add a birthday party place suggestion. My six year old son had his birthday party at the
Lego Outlet at Potomac Mills. The kids had a blast and as a parent, it was a breeze. In a nutshell you pay $10 a kid and they set up a table for the kids to build Legos (the birthday kid must be at least 4 years old) which our party was Racers. After the kids build their cars, they set up a ramp to race the cars. When that is over each kid gets $10 to shop in the store (the $10 is a minimum with at least 5 kids). In other words you pay for the store to host the party if you buy stuff there, not bad if your kid likes Legos! They do not allow food in the store, but there are plenty of tables in front of the store to serve drinks and snacks. I would suggest an early party to ensure you can get a table.

Email us your birthday party suggestions and we will post them here.
