The Occoquan Spring Arts & Crafts Show is being held throughout the streets of Occoquan’s Historic District, today, Saturday, June 4 from 10 am to 6 pm, and Sunday, June 5 from 10 am to 5 pm. The arts & crafts show will include crafters and artisans not only from Occoquan but from across the United States.

The show, hosted by the town of Occoquan, has been an annual event for more than 25 years. Attending the show is free; however, to get into town, you’ll most likely need to board a shuttle bus at one of the satellite locations (the Vulcan Materials entrance on Route 123 across the Occoquan River in Fairfax County, the corner of Route 123 and Old Bridge Road, or the corner of Minnieville and Old Bridge roads). The shuttle bus fee is $4 per person, and children 12 and under ride free. If you’ve ever been to the fair, you know how congested it gets, and that driving into town and parking is impossible.

Here’s the latest list of local merchants, crafters, food providers, musicians and other entities: Craft Show Details.

Tuesday, May 10 – The annual event, Taste of Lake Ridge, is on for today from
Pizza, Rita’s Italian Ice, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Tim’s Rivershore Restaurant and Zoes Kitchen.

Our advice: get there early today. The event always draws a crowd, and you can be sure with today’s great weather, there will be a big turnout. If you’d like, you can always get your tickets in advance at the LRPRA office at Oakwood Drive and Old Bridge Road and avoid waiting in line at the event.

Friday, April 29 – It was opening day for Woodbridge Little League (WLL), and hundreds of Little Leaguers, parents, supporters and local dignitaries turned out for the official start of the 2011 season.

The smell of hot dogs and popcorn wafted through the air as the familiar ball park concession stand opened for the first time, a dozen or so local dignitaries were introduced and thanked for their support of WLL, and the Potomac Nationals mascot, Uncle Slam, stole the show as he frolicked on the field, rounded the bases and high-fived the players.

The Tee Ball division's Scrappers, RockHounds and River Cats teams recite the Little League pledge during Friday night's opening ceremony.

Each of the 48 teams from all nine divisions — ranging from the 4- to 7-year-olds in the Tee Ball division on up to the 16- to 18-year-olds in the Big League division — were introduced and trotted around the infield to cheers and applause from those in the filled bleachers.
A local family, the Tyrrell’s, founders of Tyme ‘n’ Tyde Marina, were the sole inductees for 2011 into the Woodbridge Little League Hall of Fame for their long-time support. They have been responsible for sponsoring more than 300 Little League players over the years whose families were unable to afford the registration fees.

And after the ceremony wrapped up, four games began, lasting well into the night until the last game, an 8-3 win by the Twins over they Yankees in the AAA division, ended just as the automatic lights shut off at 10 pm.
Josh Hyman.

SATURDAY, APRIL 2 – The word went out via email, social networks, telephone calls, flyers, handouts, word of mouth, the media … Marine Cpl. Joshua Himan was coming home. Hundreds turned out to welcome him home. People lined the streets for miles along his route home, cheering as he went past. From I-95, west on Dale Blvd., then to Princedale Dr. and up Orangewood Dr. to the place he’s called home his entire life. American flags and Marine Corps flags were everywhere. And Josh was honestly surprised — overwhelmed, actually — that so many would turn out just to see him come home.

But this was no ordinary Marine. And this was no ordinary homecoming.

Marine Cpl. Joshua Himan was severely injured in September 2009 when the Humvee he was riding in struck an improvised explosive device (IED) in Helmand Province in Afghanistan. Cpl. Himan suffered injury to his spinal cord, and as a result has been paralyzed from the chest down.

He spent time at the VA Medical Center in Richmond, Bethesda Naval Hospital, and most recently at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He’s undergone intensive physical therapy as well as counseling to get him ready to go out on his own, and return to as much as a normal life as he can have after being so seriously wounded. And while at Walter Reed, Cpl. Himan said he still feels like his tour in Afghanistan hadn’t ended — that even though he’s back in the states, he’s not really home yet.

Well, that changed today when Cpl. Himan emerged from the van that brought him home, and he wheeled his wheel chair up his driveway, flanked on both sides by Marines, up a zigzagging wheel chair ramp and into a completely refurbished $100,000 home makeover that will allow him to be as self-sufficient as he can possibly be. The money was raised entirely through voluntary donations; workers also donated time, expertise and supplies to remake his house into a wheel chair-accessible home.

The project went swiftly from being green-lighted to completion. “On Dec. 31, we said we’d do the project,” said Jacob Koch, president of the Northern Virginia Fuller Center for Housing, who oversaw the entire project. “We had no money. We said we’d do it. We took a leap of faith, knowing that there should be some people out here to help us. Well, on the spot, in that meeting, we made one or two phone calls, we got a couple of contractors immediately on board. And I went home and started making some calls and everyone started making calls and over the period of the next four weeks, we raised all the money we needed — in a month. That is crazy. And we broke ground on Feb. 3, and it took 58 days to do construction and we’re bringing him home today.”

Support for this makeover project has come not just from the local community, but from all over. “All over Northern Virginia, DC, Maryland,” Koch said. “Actually, we’ve had support from all over the country. We’ve had checks come in from California, Texas, you name it. All over the country. It’s actually captured the hearts and minds of a lot of people. Not just here in Northern Virginia.”

Koch oversaw the entire project — from fundraising to lining up contractors and subcontractors, getting the volunteers in place, ensuring construction materials were on site — everything. He admits it was a “daunting” task, but it was made easy by the outpouring of community support. “I had a wonderful team around me,” Koch said, “and I cannot thank them enough.”

It's pretty obvious Cpl. Himan is happy to be home.

And the impact this effort had on Cpl. Himan was clearly evident. As he wheeled himself up the driveway, past his fellow Marines that lined both sides, he was grinning broadly. And when he wheeled up the ramp and across the threshold of the made-over house and took it all in, he dissolved into tears, overwhelmed by what he saw and the recognition of what had taken place in his home. After going through his new living area, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and laundry, he wheeled back out where more family, friends and media had gathered. He was so overwhelmed, he could barely speak.

“I can’t say ‘thank you’ enough,” he said, trying unsuccessfully to choke back tears.

Some of the workers who worked on the house returned as invited guests to say hello to Cpl. Himan and his family. John Baskerville and William Miller, both with Woodbridge Plumbing, worked for two weeks on the house. And they didn’t know Cpl. Himan or the family “until now,” Miller said. “It’s amazing,” said Baskerville. “I’m very proud to be a part of this activity here. It’s for a great cause.”

You’ll find that theme running throughout this project — people who didn’t know Cpl. Himan or the family at all, pitching in to do whatever they could in honor of and in support of Cpl. Himan’s sacrifice.

Said Sgt. Cory Callahan, one of the Marines who stood in formation for hours along the driveway to Cpl. Himan’s house: “It’s a good experience, it’s a good cause. I’d rather be here today than anywhere else. I’ve never even met him.” Even the Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. Joseph F. Dunford, Jr., the second-highest ranking officer in the Marine Corps, attended — showing up not only to welcome Cpl. Himan home, but to thank each and every Marine who came to honor their fellow Marine and welcome him home.

Recognizing that he was home, truly home at last here in Woodbridge, Cpl. Himan spoke emotionally about what it meant to really be back: “There’s a lot of guys that didn’t get to come home,” said Cpl. Himan, tears and emotion choking off his words. “So, I’m a lucky guy.”
Folks are working in their yards in earnest, you can see the beginnings of newly sown grass shooting up, the early spring bloomers — forsythia, daffodil, tulip trees — are showing signs of life.

So on this day, the last day of winter and the first day of spring, we thought it appropriate to bring you a few refreshing pictures to let you know that the snows and bitter cold of winter are fading quickly, and that the signs of spring are beginning to be seen if you look around carefully enough.

This enormous sign loomed over I-95 like a rising moon, big and bright and seen easily every night from either direction. It’s been shredded by winds that have gusted up to 60mph according to the National Weather Service. It was only last week that one half of the sign was ripped away due to high winds. Now it’s been finished off — the other half of the sign is gone, leaving a blank, round iron structure with pieces of canvas flapping in the wind.

Some 2,000 customers of Dominion Virginia Power were without power this afternoon as the winds swept into the area. The power company is asking for outages to be reported at 866-366-4357.

Monday, Feb. 21 - Prince William County officials apparently tried to stay on top of what they thought were dangerous fire conditions when they issued a fire ban on Friday, Feb. 18, due to dry conditions and expected high winds. But even with the ban in place, six major fires flared up the next day across the county. According to Prince William officials, the response in fighting those fires was “the most extensive fire and rescue response in more than 30 years.”

“This was the busiest day I have experienced in my 31-year career with Prince William County,” said Chief Kevin McGee, Prince William Department of Fire and Rescue in a released statement. “We had the support of so many people on this from Chief Hickerson of the Nokesville Volunteer Fire Department recalling off-duty volunteers and available fire and rescue units to Prince William County Police working traffic issues and road closures. We also had support from our colleagues in Fairfax County, Arlington County and the City of Alexandria. I am especially proud of all the men and women who were able to bring these fires under control with no loss of life and minimal structural damage. This was a team effort, and I am proud of everyone involved.”

The six fires swept across some 300 acres of county land in the course of the day. Officials listed these details:

• In the Woodbridge area, near the intersection of Prince William Parkway and Smoketown Road, a 25-acre brush fire drew 19 units in response. No cause has yet been determined in that fire.
• Near Northern Virginia Community College, a brush fire consumed 10 acres near the Woodbridge Campus of Northern Virginia Community College. No injuries or structural damage was reported, and the fire was brought under control and the area cleared by 9:30 p.m. No cause has yet been determined.
• The most significant fire began in the Occoquan Forest neighborhood, and was estimated to cover approximately 200 acres. A tree blown over onto a power line is believed to have been the cause of the three-alarm fire, and 52 units were deployed to combat it. Power and phone service was lost to some of the residents.
• Behind K-Mart near I-95 south at the Dale City exit, 10 units responded to a fire consuming 25 acres. A 29-year-old man was charged by the Fire Marshal’s Office for carelessly damaging property by fire. It is believed he left residue of a trash fire in the wooded area behind the K-mart that started this fire. No injuries or structural damage was reported, and the fire was brought under control and the area cleared by 9:30 p.m.
• In the Lake Jackson area near Route 234 and Sinclair Mill, six engines fought a fire that consumed one acre; no injuries or structural damage reported. No cause has yet been determined.
• Near I-95 northbound & Cardinal Drive, 11 units responded to a brush fire consuming 35 acres. No injuries or structural damage were reported. The fire was brought under control and the area cleared by 10 p.m. No cause has yet been determined.
